    Hi All

I have aload of pulsing xenia and a non pulsing xenia, now the pulsing xenia is shrinking/dying and the other if okay. Could this dying off cause a nitrate spike? it has been shrivelling for a couple of weeks and water perameters are normally really good but the last couple of days the nitrate is going up! Even after a 80 litre water change.

Should i remove the dying xenia? or just keep up the water changes and hope it recovers?

    Cheers, Martin

    Hi Martin
How much is there dying off?
I had probably a golf ball size die off that I got from Heller didn't change the params in any way.

Quite alot it was spreading like wildfire, all put together i probably have around 1ft sq, with about half of it dying.

Just tested with a different test and it shows okay.Gonna do both tests again and see what happens.

Any idea whats triggered off the die back?
Have you gone onto pearls or any other ULNS system?

Just tested again with a new test kit and it looks good.....phew...

Not sure whats going on with the xenia, i use to have some elongata aswell but that died off a while back.

I have the xenia in various places in the tank and its dying off in various places, not all in one place. Could it be the urchin? but then surely it would be killing the other xenia..

Not seen any nudi in there, but will keep an eye out

could be that you tank is becoming too clean.
sounds daft but i've found that xenia always does better in nutrient rich tanks.

I lost all my Xenia when I swapped to Pearls.

But.... Since feeding 3 cubes per day, Nev spotted some pulsing yesterday, it's only a small bit, but it proves the theory if the tank is too clean it dies. Big Thumbs Up

Totally agree. I use Xenia as an indicator of cleanliness. It's sad but it flourishes when the tank is not clean (not saying it's dirty) but dies off, or at least shrinks loads when the tank is cleaner.

I have noticed that my water is getting better and more stable, which would tie in with what your all saying.

Mine is rampant and nitrates are almost undetectable.
My phos is still a bit high, so maybe that keeps it sustained.
Mind you, Ged always has high phos!

In my corals book it mentions xenia die off being related to some unknown trace element becoming used up? You could try lugols solution which contains iodine.

I believe mine are lower than yours.

Yours says 0.06 mine were 0.015 / 0.03 on a Deltec kit mate. :whistling:

    Even so.....

up to 0.08 shows no loss of colour to any SPS in my tank, it's a myth. :thumbup1:
