The reason I use a Ca reactor is that all elements are catered for in theory as we desolve old coral

I do find Carbonate needs buffering though which I believe is due to the closed system running DSB and MM inevitably some acidic compounds created and carbonate consumed

even K needs no buffering despite a hap hazard water change routine

where was your skimmer located with in the sump ?

This is one thing that makes me think

My sump is an odd set up, because it's very small (30x20 inch) however I have a 4x2x2 refuge in front where my algae grows, so my skimmer is in the correct place to do it the triton way.

However will it really make any differance providing your algae bed overflows rather than going under a baffle so as to dispel the Protiens from die off (should also be said you do harvest algae with triton otherwise you export nothing)

The reason I say this is throughput through a skimmer makes all the differance. My royal exclusive 250 supermarine does 3000lph water, and my return is maybe 6000 Lph. However this is extreme, I have a powerful skimmer and my weir will not handle the 10x flow for triton, whereas 50% of my turnover goes through my skimmer I reckon most people it would be nearer 20%. So frankly what is the point?

When I was running my holding tank, I let numerous caulerpa become my filtration, and do the job in the dt. Never caused issue. Personally I think you could easily run triton with the skimmer in it's normal place, in fact it could be argued it would be better imo
