Can anyone tell me what the black tube-like thing is on this coral? and whether it is good or bad?

    Thanks in advance

Have you seen anything pop out of the end of the tube. If so it some kind of tube worm.
If it's spongy then it maybe a black tube sponge but I doubt it as it looks a hard tube

Also I'd not rule out it being a Vermetid worm

Hmmm, is it soft or hard? does it move at all? In all honesty it looks too "perfect" in shape to be anything alive could be wrong though, I am thinking perhaps it was a support for the coral at some point? Don`t really know to be honest, but to me it looks none life like....

Well. it certainly does not appear life like.

I would even go as far to say that it is the top of a droplet bottle although, if it is, the "pressy" bit looks long.

Could be an unusualy shaped Valonia. Need a bit more info really. What happens when you poke it?
    I am thinking maybe V.Ventricaria

It's gone :w00t: .... why oh why didn't I think of poking it when it was there  I'm sure it will come back again so I'll give it a poke. I've looked up both the vermitid wrm and the v.ventricaria.........it was sort of a mixture of both.......definitely tube shaped, but the top was domed and it was shiny and black. I brushed the coral so the tenticles retracted and still couldn't see it. I then picked-up the coral and looked underneath....nothing. I've now moved the coral and looked at the rock where it was resting (in a bit of a hollow) and I'm not sure if I can see a little black blob......it's at a very difficult angle so when the lights come on properly I might tip the rock to get a better view.

WP_20151102_001.jpg WP_20151102_002.jpg WP_20151102_003.jpg the blob next to the Goni is a toadstall having a major sulk .......

We didn't see anything pop out the end and the coral was happily hugging it as opposed to avoiding contact.... I just wish I had thought of poking it to see if it was hard or soft, but it's disappeared so surely must have been soft?

If it was 1st April, you'd all have thought it was a joke! No, I didn't think to poke it or touch it.

Maybe the Spongebob character, Plankton, actually lives in your tank and that was a nuc power head rocket he built to distroy Bikini Bottom....you were too late to stop the evil plot; he launched!!!

Problem solved  I didn't get a chance to look at the rock yesterday, but it did occur to me that we should have a scrounge around the tank as it might, after all, be a bit of plastic that has since been blown off and is resting in some dark and dingy corner.
