I am having a problem with my hermit cuc.... Purchased four hermits to date and at this moment in time I reckon I only have 1 left!!! Dont know where the others are I can find two shells but they haven't moved in 3/4 days. I also have to snails and they are doing fine. What is happening? :(

Attacking and killing each other probably. I find some are bad for this. Often it down to lack of food, lack of space, or both  It's also possible you have an aggressive species... What type are they?

They are red legged hermits? Tbh I haven't fed them anything as I thought there would be enough in the tank? Might try and get 5 blue legged from somewhere, hopefully they will eat the rubbish in the tank and not each other!!!!

    Reds are normally ok

I still have 5 i put in 2 year ago

I lost one that got stuck in some rock work, he crawled out his shell and died :(

How did you aclimate them ?
Do have any shrimp in the tank that hablve died recently ?

Acclimate them with 30min float then 30/40 drip. Nothing else in tank they were first, I have to snails aswell now and they are fine

Poss not a long enough drip

I always drip inverts for 2 hours

Reason asking about shrimp was for iodine levels, shrimp and hermits often die during molt if iodine is out...but water change often enough should negate this

if they are killing each other for food or possibly shells have u got extra shells in the tank, everytime i added new red leg hermits they changed into new shells within days, plus i neva have neva spent as long as 2 hrs Acclimate red legs and neva had a problem so i dont see that being the reason. have u lifted the shells up that havent moved for days they still might just be getting used to ya water and hiding, good luck with the hermits they are so fun to watch.

personally i hate hermits  try not to get the blue knuckle type as when they grow large they decide to eat corals as mine did. Theres another type of blue hermit which is smaller and fine. May just be me but every time ive added a red leg to my tank its dissapeared after a short while even with plenty of shells to choose from, despite other types being fine for 8-9 months so far  ...
