Ok so on Monday I wondered what had caused my mystery substrate mound. Many ideas and suggestions given Thanks so I stayed up late on Monday and briefly got a glimpse of what I thought was a pincer but unable to ID.

Anyway stayed up last night for an hour and ............ nothing, not a jot, no movement around the rock where the substrate push came from then I come down this morning and more movement but this time it's a TUNNELL :w00t:

This is at the opposite side of the rock to where Monday's substrate push came from. The rock is approx 6-8 inches accross. I can't move the rock as it supports the left side of my rockwork. This is slightly worrying if I have something burrowing under it. The hole is about the circumference of a smartie tube and having shined a light into it appears to disappear under the rock. I can see in about an inch or so.

    Latest pics below....

Monday morning and first substrate movement..

Wednesday Morning and this tunnel appears..

Just disappears under the rock to the left..

Any more ideas with tunnels or how to entice it out and see if it's nice or evil ?

Try a bottle trap next to it mate with some goodies inside to tempt it out

Does the tank make any snapping sounds at all, especially around moonlight time or lights out?
It could be a pistol shrimp, mantis even. Not sure if Eunice worms make tunnels?
The treat in a bottle trap idea is best though. Interested to see what it is if you don't have gobies :)

    Re: Mystery Tunnelling ?

Popped a goby in nearly 2 years ago as we could hear clicking on a night and thought it might me a pistol. Never paired with anything and eventually jumped out the back of the tank one day and curled his fins up.

This is the first physical evidence of anything other than the stock I am aware of in 2 years that I don't know about.

Yes we get the clicks and have done for nearly 2 years but we've never seen anything or indeed had anything like the tunnel or substrate moving over the last few days.

With the substrate moving and now the tunnel I would assume a crab or pistol but I've never added one nor seen anything to suggest this until this week. Just hope it's not a mantis.

Thanks for the link Funky, if I get another glimpse it may help.

Are you happy having the crab in your tank ? It would appear whatever mine is it's been there for nearly 2 years without me knowing, or at least seeing it, so i'm wondering if just to leave it after your comment.
