watching with interest on your experiment ged.
i like the idea of it taking place of all the other reactors & equipment. to just have one unit to do the job.
i may of overlooked on reading thou this thread on and off, but do the pearls have a expiry date when they need to be changed like rowa.
    keep the updates coming. [thumbup1.gif]
    cheers.

    Hi Barracuda.

Thanks for the comments. From what I understand it, when you first put them in the reactor, you mark the level of them. After a few months, they degrade and you just fill them back to the line. No need to change or replace them as you would do with Rowa.

Yep. I have so much more room in my sump area now it is unreal.

The tank looks fine again today, although there is definitely now a bio film building up on the glass. Similar to what Nev experienced, and it is like a whitish colour and not like an algae film if that makes sense.

    All tests done excluding Phosphates.

    Mg - 1350
    KH - 8.6
    pH - 8.04
    Salinity - 35 / 1.026
    Temp - 26.8
Calcium - 440 ish (maybe a little less)

Turbinaria seems to be coming back around, not sure if it was from being placed too high in flow in the tank originally or not. I have moved it to the bottom of the tank the other day, and it definitely looks a lot better today.

Also spotted the Randall's Goby in his corner of the tank, so he hasn't made a bolt for the sump again so far. If the stupid fish swam 3 foot to the left, then he would find his mate the pistol shrimp.

As you know me and my "it'll be alright attitude". I lobbed all the 1000ml of pearls in ,in 1 go. Only things that have happened so far is my skimmer stopped working fror 2 days but today it has really pulled some plop out. My ph dropped from its normal 8.23 - 8.34 to 8.19- 8.26 but just buffered with a bit of bi carb. I'll keep an eye on it. I have changed setting on mp40's so that my have something to do with it. Also have alot more colour coming back in a red plate which was shocked when I went away. All other param's not moved but not tested tonight as I have just done a water change.

I have been using the NP pellets for almost 9 months now, and really can not fault them. So the pearls will have to be even better in results to warrant there high price, this I would like to see as at the moment the price above the competitors is extreme.
When you take into account the fact that you need more pearls per litre, then the cost is even more.
    Cheers
    Pete

If you think they are expensive, try weighing 1 litre of biopearls and one litre of Bio Pellets.
The volume may be the same but the weight of the material is certainly not.

Our pearls contain more of the essential ingredients which is heavy. the fillers you can use to bulk the product up are very light.

Ill leave you to draw your own conclusions from that.

    Tony.

Time for a bit of skimmer porn.

For the first time ever since owning this tank, the skimmer has been skimming it's nuts off today. It is also the first time ever it has collected so much skim mate. Yes it absolutely stinks, and I am sure I read somewhere that this shouldn't have happened, but there was definitely a thick smelly bio film within the skimmer. When I went to wash it, it came off like a strip of paper. On a positive side, it was definitely easier to clean then normal though.

I have had to turn the air tap down a bit, as it is going mad, and so I am now trying to produce a slightly dryer skim.

What's going to be interesting is when the skimmer calms down what the residue nutrients are,
    I suspect a little residue PO4 [023.gif]

I do like that idea of low maintenance on the Bio Pearls

Is the KH holding just using the buffering from the pearls Ged?

    I haven't tested today mate.

I have been buffering the KH anyway, I normally go through 30g of Reef Buffer mixed in my RO water every week. My tank uses about 25ltrs per week so the 30g has been enough to keep it at about 8.4 / 8.6 for a few weeks now.

Give me 5 mins and I will test the KH for today.

    Other tests results are:

    Salinity - 35 / 1.026
    Temp - 26
pH - 7.94 (slighlty down for this time of day) although last 24 hours pH ranges from 7.71 - 7.94

    Hi Tony,
I have not seen the pellets in person yet only pictures, and I am sure you are right. But TMC have set the price not you, and it is them that are going to have a hard time selling it against the completion. That is a real shame as I am sure you have worked very hard on this product, only to see that at the end of the day price is the utmost thing.
It will be very interesting to see the results of both pellets after running for a good amount of time, and like all claims do they both do what it was claimed to do in full or part.
    Cheers
    Pete
