    Hi all

My KH keeps dropping despite what i think is stable Ca and My

My system is 500 litres mainly SPS and few LPS and lots of Zoas.

My Ca is 440, My Mg is 1300, Salinity 1.026

I use Hanna Checkers and JBL for KH, Nyos for Ca and Salifert for Mg

My main issue now seems can not keep KH high and stable

Currently i am dosing 142ml of FM KH, 30ml of FM Ca and 1ml of FM Mg.

See the table below and if you compare the date and time ( main test is at 2300) but some extra are not, all noted and in the comment showing the KH adjustments made over the last 10 days

    Hi Wal
As you are balling you need to do water changes to keep salinity inbalance. This may also be skewing your readings as this isnt mentioned in the above nor what you tested it to be?

You use more alk mix in terms of ml than mag and calc mainly due to it not being able to be disolved in the same ratio. Ie 2kg mag or calc per 5l and 0.5kg alk per 5l so already on a like for like comparison its only 1/4 strength if my memory serves.

You will note I aint no chemist as its nowhere near as simple as that as molecular weights etc come into play.

Im sure someone far more intelligent than me will be along shortly to correct my errors :)

Many thanks for your reply, i do water changes once a week or every other week, but i have not done so in the period mentioned above to see what is going on i.e since 24/01

My ratio is even lower than that as i mix 2kg per 5 litres for Ca and Mg while i mix 350 gm per 5 litres of RO water

But my issue is that the more KH i add to get level stable i keep losing it back at the same rate

If its been low for awhile it could be being soaked up by your sand and rockwork.

Keep nudging the dosage up as needed but watch for it to rise. Keeping record like you are is the best way to track it.

Remember once your around where you want it you need to reduce to your maintenence level.

Which will also rise as your coral stock grows / increases

Is it better to dose at night or spread it through the whole day 24 hours

The best option is to spread through 24 hours. You need to test, record adjust. A full tank of SPS might use 2DKH daily!

It's not unusual, my tanks pretty sparse atm and I'm using about 0.75-1DKH daily.
