My first disaster already......

Well i woke up this morning to find my tiny yellow clown goby missing , i waited a while and still no sight so i started poking around in the tank in case he had unfortunatly died ...

I moved all the rock and sifted the sand bed checked behind pipes and heater etc absolutely no sign of him .... however i found m blue legged hermit crab dead and outside his shell ! his shell was under a small rock which is where he was perching most of his time and his body was found on the other side of the tank ?!
What on earths happened here im starting to think the hermit crab has tried to snack on the goby when it was unawares and the hermit has then died as a result ?

Water Parameters are all fine tested again this morning 0 ammonia 0 nitrites 0 nitrates .... there was a little nitrates a few days ago but i did a water change

Ph 8.3, 0 Phosphates

Temperature 26.5o C

All the other snails in the CUC are doing fine and my pally's are still open so nothings affected them

Any Ideas ?

Have you found the goby ? Seems strange the hermit would have left his shell unless he was outgrowing it. I would try and have some N03 and phos for your corals though.
Have you checked behond the tank and around as it would be more likely that your goby has jumped out of the tank. I would not have thought it would kill a fish but there would be a chance of them killing your snails to take there shells for sure.

The tank has a lid and canopy no way he could have jumped out and no sign around the tank
It's a small tank and I've moved everything around not even a piece of flesh nothing apart from a dead hermit who was half eaten looking his rear end was all falling apart no idea how he managed to crawl such a long distance out his shell with that damage unless something else has nibbled in him
The rest of the cuc is accounted for and all seem fine

Feel very disheartened to have this incident so early on determined to learn from it if I can gather what's happened

iv got an idea about the hermit. could it be a molt?
or it could have been attacked by another crab as that crab liked it's shell and wanted it.

as for the fish it could have died and been eaten by the cuc which is what there there for.

Maybe it was a molt? It was just his legs and head and I have an idea for the goby lots saying about them getting stuck in filters and canisters as they are so small need to run home and check my filters

if it was only part of it I'd guess at a molt. they shed there skin when they get too big for it just like shrimps do.
it can be very hard to tell the difference aswel some times.

you could try your filter if not as said the cuc would eat it up. I have had the same with my shrimp thinking it died and all it did was shed its skin lol

Is it really possible for a single hermit to devour a goby in 3 hours ? as when i came downstairs about 2-3 in the morning to make baby milk the clown goby was still swimming around and then about 6 am poof gone not even a trace.

be careful not to disturb too much you will make things worse for yourself.
and yeah iv had it happen to me you will be surprised how fast small fish get 'cleaned up'

Im sure he is just hiding and taunting you.
But fiddling all the time is asking for trouble.

I placed a pigny wrasse in my sump as it "wasnt quite right" and expected it to pass in the night. Once a week or so I see it swimming about, but when doing water changes or any work in the sump, its no where to be found and thats with no rockwork to hide in !!!

I hope he hasn't kicked the bucket already he ate for the first time yesterday had a few nibbles of brine and mysis and he seemed to always perch on the side of the filter housing but still nowhere to be seen I hope he's hiding in a hole in the live rock other than that must have died and been scoffed by sir killalot the blue legged hermit

Hopefully it turns up. I added a highfin goby to an old tank of mine before. I seen it the day i added it and never again after that. It happens unfortunately. As said though moving rocks around can cause a mini cycle so be careful

Well think ive worked out what happened to the little clown goby I came in from work tonight quite late at 11 pm and walked past the tank with all its lights off but could just see in with the living room light

The clowns are sleeping against the filter pump as usual and my spotted goby is sleeping in his burrow under a rock I notice Mr blue leg hermit slowly making his way over to the goby watch him for a few minutes then dive onto him from above and try to grab hold of the spotred goby luckily this fish is bigger and was having none of it
Seems my hermits a little s h i. ... you know the rest confident he got the little clown goby in similar assault when it was resting
