Currently battling algae smiley-sex020 :club: but I will be triumphant (eventually!).

Hopefully my new tank mates will help - Tuxedo Urchins as well as a new regime as regards nutrient control and water quality.

Hi, I use the stock supplied return pump, but in my previous Kent Marine I had to get a replacement that was a very tight fit. I like the idea of a variable flow return pump and have been looking at the Jecod/Jeboa return pumps that have an electronic controller (do a search on eBay or look on Fishstreet.com). Sometimes I find the flow from the stock pump to be a little too high and would therefore like to control it in the future with one of these pumps.

Siporax is amazing. Put a bag in last night and this morning my tank looks amazing [emoji3]

All corals seem to be extra puffed up and extra colourful.

Have got my po4 down to 0.04 at last, but my nitrates were still on the higher side of where I'd like them to be.

So I came up with a new game plan..... Sack the nopox as it wasn't making any difference and get some siporax and chemi-pure. The chemi-pure arrives today but the siporax already seems to be making a huge difference [emoji2]

So fingers crossed will mean no more gha [emoji12]

I highly doubt the siporax has kicked in yet it takes upto 6weeks to be of any use as it needs to populate it's self with bacteria.
nopox also takes time to start seeing results as again it provides food source for the bacteria which will need to grow to consume no3. it isn't great with po4 removal imo and you need to run a separate po4 remover such as rowa

Rodger that [MENTION=20322]warby[/MENTION]....will look forward to when it has been seeded then. Will be nice to have some respite from GHA, although mine is not half as bad as what I've seen on other members threads.

I think my corals are enjoying the nitrates, all are puffed out and very colourful. Will keep testing no3 to monitor progress and have ordered a 100ml bag of purigen to help.

Worst case scenario will be a very small sump going in to my cabinet to become a refugium.

Have nailed the No3 issue [emoji4]

Have added a 100ml bag of purigen, the siporax a while ago and have also added some bio balls. Woke up the next day and the readings are now....No3 = 1.5ppm and po4 = 0.04.

Have added a multi coloured tuxedo urchin to polish off the gha, so hopefully my tank is going to look sweet in a few days [emoji4] [emoji2] [emoji4]

Big changes are a coming........

Will be removing the rear compartment and running an external filter. Will run both together for a while to seed the new filter.

Have just bought an Algae Scrubber (UAS) :w00t:!

These mods will give more open swim/sand space. Will also allow the Tunze skimmer to be mounted properly, thus allowing proper surface skimming (whereas it's hiding in the rear at the mo!).

The external filter will become more of a reactor and alongside the scrubber should help keep my tank algae/nutrient free (ish).

May also move up to a Aqua Oak Large Cube tank with 155L volume (got to keep the missus sweet.....she doesn't like a big one :w00t:).

Added Siporax to mine a few days ago, and was going to wait a good month before expecting anything amazing, as far as I could tell, it's just very porous to host tank bacteria as live rock would. Expecting roughly the same period as anew tank then for it to start doing it's do.

Interestingly too, I chose to add it to supplement the NoPox, I read a fair bit around it before hand and both AAC and RedSeaKev mention that the two compliment each other nicely, the carbon dosing feeds the bacteria you want grow on the Siporax. As far as NoPox is concerned, the Siporax gives more solid surface area for the bacteria to settle on :) That was my take on it anyway.

Are you finding your Tux is managing to keep on top of the GHA? I added mine from the other tank and ever since he's raced (relatively) around the tank but seems to be struggling to keep on top of it. I was tempted to get another, my LFS tends to get the pretty purple ones, so fancied getting him a mate to help him out.

[MENTION=20322]warby[/MENTION] - Am I kidding myself that giving NoPox time to get established is going to start getting on top of phosphate? Would you recommend an additional method for phosphate regardless?

can pretty much guarantee you will need a phos remover. I tried it without and over time my phos level rose and I was using cheato which soaks up some aswel. ended up going back to using rowa in a reactor

Ahh right I would of thought the nopox would have a detrimental affect on the chaeto? Just started using chaeto again myself after the pellets doing my head in lol
