It was caused by high nitrates i think
i use pellets for carbon dsoing and the pump failed whilst we were on holiday
and i assume all the bacteria died
so ive added some maxspect media and nitrates are on the way down again

i always seem to have some patches of cyano especially when i top up the carbon pellets

well finally removed the last of the live rock from my sump
must be three salt buckets full
replaced with three boxes of bio-media

    fingers crossed

plus im now able to have a very clean sump
hopefully this will reduce the potential for re-release of phosphate

    only time will tell

and on a real positive note ive been looking high and low for a rainbow chalice for years

turns out i might have one (will try and get a pic next weekend)
had a real pale chalice or a couple of years
    thats colouring up nicely

purples blues yellows green & orange

its the hope that kills you hehe

Well, I've just run out of tonic and if I continue with neat gin (a) the words will get fuzzy and (b) I'll have forgotten what I'd read by the morning LOL.

I will read it though, just not tonight!

Can you explain a bit more about your bio spheres in your sump? We have a largish rock in ours. Along with the skimmer, a bag of carbon and a reactor

its a very small polymer that works a bit like siporax

produuces an area of low oxygen that will remove nitrates
