OK, there comes a time when trying to take pics with the iPhone just doesn't hack it and having tried a few different compacts I still cant get a decent coral pic.
So guys I'm looking for some sort of direction, been looking at the Nikon D range or the Cannon EOS range.
Now the only problem is being a reefer I'd much rather spend my tank tokens on the tank so what would you consider to be the best buy? Seen a lot of these going through ebay at what I would class as decent prices, also what sort of lens whould you recommend to get good close up pics.

As a starter mate look at a nikon D60, think these are going pretty cheap atm but still a great camera. The close up macro lenses however for any camera aint cheap

Pretty good price, they all tend to hold there value quiet a bit. I never did get round to ordering a macro lens. However I got some on these Macro Close Up Lenses for Nikon D40 D40X D90 D3 52mm on eBay (end time 21-Jan-11 17:02:16 GMT)

They screw on to your existing lens and act as a macro. It certainly is not a macro lens, however I got some pretty good shots with them.

A good buy. I recommend everyone to try compact/bridge type cameras before SLR's. Most people simply do not need the functions/abilities of an SLR to achieve the images they require. Also many believe that an SLR=good pictures. This is simply not true-the photographer forms the image-the camera merely records it as he/she intends.

Also, SLR's are only good if you are willing to buy good lenses to accompany them-and this can run into £1000's each.

I am currently writing a beginners guide to tank photography-so watch this space. Hopefully it will answer many questions people have on this subject.

Nice one Matt, any advise you could give me as I can never get a well focused tank pic with any camera I've tried, they always come out blurred.

Hi if it's fine with chris then it's fine with me mate.

It's camera on it's own with strap and lens cover with a memory card.
In good working order with one fault, battery cover flap won't stay shut but this was easily sorted with a electrical cable tie , anyway pmed

Just take loads of pics and you will get there.
You can usually increase the speed of the shutter (ISO, higher the value, faster the shutter speed) but as ISO increases the level of noise or distortion increases.

When you get your camera Steve give me a shout and I'll pop over one night.

I'll bring my gear and show you a few things with your new toy.

If you want of course! It'll cost you a brew though!
