Glossary.
Aerobic: In the presence of oxygen.
Alk: (alkalinity), the measure of total ions in seawater which contribute to its pH buffering capacity. Units: dKH or meq/l
Anaerobic/anoxic: Absence of oxygen.
Ca: Calcium, the substance from which invertebrates build their skeletal structures.
Denitrification: The process of converting Nitrate into Nitrogen gas. Carried out by bacterial species in a low oxygen environment. NB NOT in an anaerobic/anoxic environment.
Dissolved Oxygen: Another way of describing the amount of oxygen in solution.
KH: (K) carbonate hardness
Mg: Magnesium, helps in the calcification process of invertebrates and is essential to balance Kh and Ca.
NH3: Ammonia Nitrogen, the first toxic stage of the nitrogen cycle.
NO2: NitrIte, unstable form of nitrogen and the second stage of the nitrogen cycle.
NO3: NitrAte, final part of nitrogen cycle which denitrifies in anoxic conditions and turns into nitrogen gas N2.
Nitrification: The process of converting ammonia to nitrite and subsequently nitrite to nitrate. Carried out by bacterial species in an aerobic environment.
O2: Oxygen, a measure of the oxygen concentration in solution.
PO4: Phosphate, an unwanted nutrient found in tap water etc that feeds slime and hair algaes.
pH: Log to the base 10 of Hydrogen ions, or to you and me, the measure of acidity in solution.
