I am just wondering how many people feed garlic foods to their fish and what is their opinion on it?
It is not generally recommended to feed garlic foods to fish.
I would personnally not feed garlic.
i wouldnt feed garlic as its toxic to seahorses and some fish but there are other appertite enhancers such as vitamin b12 and beta gluten
ok, i wont bother just heard that it could cause harm so i thought i would ask what others think
Not too long ago it was thought that garlic had some positive properties for immune systems etc and you will still read lots of info on line about the use of garlic but there is no any real evidence that it does any good and logically why would it?
Why on earth would a terrestrial bulb from the onion species do any good to a marine fish what so ever, it just makes no sense.
Dont waste your time.
I have used brine shrimp with garlic for the past 4 years and have never had a problem and never lost a fish
Niether have i ever had white spot
Also my Local Fish Shop always uses brine shrimp and garlic
If you have White Spot the garlic is supposed to aid recovery
I will still continue to use brine shrimp and garlic despite the adverse comments on this thread
As per Paul, I wouldn't touch the stuff.
There is mountains of scientific evidence to state it causes harm to marine fish.
I haven't used garlic for the past 4 years, and I've never lost a fish.
Neither have I ever had Whitespot.
I know a couple of LFS who don't use garlic.
If you have Whitespot then garlic is supposed to aid recovery. There are many other witchcraft cures which are supposed to work as well.
I'll continue to not use garlic.
I have even read that some folk use ginger. If that was the case i would be alright as i am the guy that makes ginger nut biscuits Big Thumbs Up
We've used it a few times when we had White spot. Don't know if it helped or not. I remember reading something about whitespot not liking the smell???
The parasite is a very basic organism compared to humans. It does not have a nose.
I read more then once about the garlic debate, but as yet I have not read anywhere that it harms the fishes either.
It's because your not reading academic journals (scientific studies) which are not available to the public, unless you want to pay £30 each for one.
I've read them, and they all state it does damage to marine fish.
I've read many post on this matter, and can say that I will never feed my fish with garlic.
I will have a search for some info, as my mentor has gone into great detail about this matter, if memory serves studies have been done on salmon in Scotland, to such an extent that if they are feed garlic they are no longer classed as fit for human consumption, its too do with the damage done to the liver and kidneys.
Anyway as said will try and find info...
I read it causes liver damage, and doesn't stop whitespot at all, just encourages feeding. I used it for a week but stopped after further research
could anyone inform me if im allowed to post links to another site and if Im allowed to copy and post text from another forum on the above?
OK, I've found the old info I was looking for, how-ever it looks like I can not post it on here, so if you would like too know more about Garlic please pm me and I will forward you a link, make sure you got time and cup of tea as its a hell of a read.
And again, I must say that I do not and will not ever feed food that contains Garlic!
