First ever marine tank from the start - 72 x 24 x 30

Hello all

As the title says, I'm in the very early stages of setting up my first ever marine tank, which will be a mixed reef (initially softies and lps I think). I've kept FW for years and always wanted to try marine - with the help of this forum I reckon it's time to give it a go! I thought if I kept a diary it might be of interest to someone else in the future. I'll doubtless be posting lots of questions on the main forum, and I'll use this thread to keep track of where I am.

So, first things first, the tank itself. A year ago I bought a tank from Ian at aquariums4life (who I *highly* recommend). It's a 72 x 24 x 30 tall on a white gloss cabinet with central weir and sump. The front glass is Optiwhite. All in including sump it works out to 1000l or so. The tank set me back a fair bit cost wise so for the last 9 months or so it's housed my Tanganyikan setup while I saved and worked on persuading the wife....

*******Pictures to appear here but not allowed to post links yet!

The sump is a simple 3 section with double baffles, and at the moment I run it as a big external filter - masses of alphagrog and a load of moss balls, with a Fluval SP4 return pump.

Going Salty
Step 1 then is to move on the Tangs and drain the tank. I have struck a deal with a chap to trade the fish for around 80kg of dried live rock and various marine bits, so hopefully picking that all up in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, today I've ordered an RO unit (100GPD 4-stage with DI) and I'm in full research mode. So far I'm thinking:

Lighting: 2 x Evergrow IT2060 units

Skimmer: Bubble Magus Curve 9 or Red Devil RDC-1800

Auto Top up: I'm assuming I will want one due to the rate of evap on the tank, and there is space in the cabinet for maybe. 60l reservoir.

Wavemakers etc: to be determined!

I'm hoping that lot will cover the equipment side for now? I know there's huge amounts of other things I might want in the future but that should get me started, right...!?

Me too! That's a monster first tank. I expect you will end up buying a trillion other things in addition to those listed above though!! Good luck pal.

Thank you both. Going to be some highs and lows along the way I think!

Here are a couple of pics of the tank as is, to give you an idea of what I'm working with. The Tangs are going in the next couple of weeks.

Hi

I've made some progress on collecting the bits - have most of the dead rock, skimmer, ordered lights etc. Not much to see but will do some pics on my day off...!

Thought I'd update this a little since I finally feel like we're making progress.

So over the last two months I've accumulated the following:

2 x Evergrow IT2080 Pros - biggest expense but hopefully well worth it...
BM Curve 7 skimmer - this was a bargain but I realise it probably won't be big enough forever
2 Jebao wp40s and 2 Sicce Voyager 8s, with controllers. Possibly a little over the top but all at good prices. Will have a play and see what I need to keep and what can go.
Smart ATU system
2 Visitherm 400W heaters

On top of that, I've also bought a lot of dead live rock, from various sources. In fact, I think maybe a little too much. Following a lot of research, it's all been in a bleach bath, a short acid bath, 3-4 weeks in fresh regularly changed RO water, and as of yesterday it's all in the tank in the dark, cooking in salt water:

I added some ATM Colony to get things started and now it's all taped up with bin bags. Fingers crossed!

I know this hasn't been the most thrilling tank diary in the world, but finally I'm getting somewhere!

The rock is washed and cooked, the salt and sand is bought, and we're finally filling....!

The scape isn't exactly what I had planned originally but I'm fairly happy with it. It's stable and I haven't had to use much putty, so I can still tweak it. The sand is the Reeflowers pearl white, which is a calcium carbonate sand. I went for the larger grain size and I'm very happy with it, I think it looks great.

Filling it is a slow process, it takes me a couple of hours to make 25l of RO so maybe by the end of the week! I decided to use H2O salt in the end and it seems to mix very well.

My plan is to add another small bottle of colony once there's a little more water and I can get heaters and power heads running. Then I'm thinking I'll add pods and Rotifera to get things started, and leave the tank over Christmas since I'm away anyway. Fingers crossed it will be ready for some clean up crew in the New Year. Very excited.

Make sure you leave room to clean the glass, allowing for coral growth

I left 6" on the current tank and its not enough 5 years down the line

Thank you for the comments guys, appreciate it. Clearwater - good point on the clearance, I will go back and shift a few pieces. Most of it has 6" but I hadn't really thought about coral growth...!

Ive bought a bottle of "reef soup" which includes various lives pod types, Rotifers, and photo plankton. Does that seem a reasonable way to start things off, given I don't have any live rock? Anything else you would add prior to a small clean up crew?

Tank is nearly full so I've ordered 10kg of live rock rubble to put in the sump. My plan is to have chaeto floating above the live rock. Would it be worth keeping the rubble in tupperwares or something to make it easier to lift out and clean? Do I need sand in there as well (not a dsb) or will the rubble be enough for pods and little critters to live and breed?

wouldn't bother with sand if you are not going DSB it will just collect detritus

you could use containers personal I would not bother with this either, just blast the base once a week the critters then get washed into the display and feed the corals
