You need Nitrates to get Phosphates down and keep them there.

If Phosphates were higher than zero, then you couldn't get them any lower unless you used Rowa or similar, if you had zero Nitrates though. If I have understood about them properly.

I would assume Chris is doing this for that reason, although it maybe another ie for some dirt in the tank as such.

Although saying that with regular water changes he should be able to keep both down.

Many of the U.S reefers I have been told are now adding nitrate to their systems as they are claiming it is improving colour and growth on SPS coral.

Is hitting zero on po4 and nitrate a good thing, I think not. Some of the finest SPS system I have seen don't have a zero nitrate reading its held around 5ppm. Not saying this is right or wrong but the option I have gone for. Your tank IMO can become too sterile.

Hmmmm might start selling my tank water on, plenty of nitrates here chaps, 50p/litre :D

Strange hobby aint it, all the effort to get to zero and now people start adding them back to the tank, crazy stuff

I don't get it. It's like setting out to create the conditions where the egyptian kharzees get flushed into the sea.

Chris - why not leave it at absolute zero and see what happens?

Because I have a mix of LPS (Acans) and SPS. It's a balancing act tbh and finding a level that all do well at. The acans IMO are not over happy with zero readings.

Possible mate, they are holding their own. Unless I feed more and find that balance then I doubt they will thrive as they did before. I will increase the feeding slightly and maintain the 12.5ltr every 3 days and Im pretty sure I can get it to stay at a constant level of below 5 and above 0.

Somehow I chopped his head off. Damn iPhones for you.

(tbh - that picture is a fake, as the cup had nothing in it nor the kettle) however he did make a brew straight after. I have found that you have to say,

    "Get that kettle on biatch"
