I got mine done through the xbox website.
fill in your details and if eligible they'll fix it for free.

I am on the understanding that these fixes are not permanant and will reoccur unless done properly through microsoft.

They changed my nephews no questions asked even out of warrenty.

Best bet Nev is MS. Failing that a friend of mine has his own shop & specialises in repairing consoles & has repaired loads of Xbox's & PS3's. Here is a link to his website.

It's all down to the solder MS use, it is lead free so gets brittle easily. Certain games, especially COD the latest one makes the console work it's backside off, gets the console really hot & the solder gets brittle & breaks up. Due to the H&S laws manufacturers cant use lead in the solder. Same thing ref brake pads on cars, they used to have asbestos in them which made them last a long time.

if you tell your nephew to go here http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/live sign in using his gamertag and password click on support and then repair follow the links provided that will one tell you if it is eligible for repair and if it is will then give you some paper work to print off (ups collection paper work ) then ring ups to arrange a pick up date , as far as i can remember thats all there is to it .

oh also tell him to note down his serial number before sending it off ,that way you can check if its a repair of a new console upon return , but 9/10 it will be a new console

Microsoft extended guarantee to three years for RROD. I called them with about 3 months left they asked me to have it boxed up for collection next day, sent to Germany by UPS but had new box back within 5 workin days with free months internet live xbox card and new warranty.
