Something I've been toying with for a while and dont know if the topic has ever been discussed on here before.
It's something we do at work with great success and thought, why wouldn't it work on here. All we do is pair up an experienced employee with a new starter and they are their first port of call with a problem.

After reading most of the New members posts it comes across that about 50% of them are new to marines and have stumbled across the forum looking for an answer to a problem. So why not give these members an option to be taken under someones wing, so to speak.

Quite an easy thing to set up, a list of the more experienced amoungst us who would want to offer their services, then a sticky with the username, real name, age and location. I know part of the mods role is to welcome new mambers to the site but what about also pointing them in that direction as well. Then it's the choice of the new member to pick someone local and within their age group, after all we wouldn't want to pair up an 18 year old with someone in their 50's.

    Thoughts?

Moved into site feedback and suggestions, as it's more appropriate for the thread

    A good idea IMO :thumbup1:

Could be interesting to implement. How do you define an experienced reefer? How do you go about preventing certain members being overloaded with help requests while others are left twiddling their thumbs so to speak (browsing the boards as normal more likely)?

The key to this is locality for example it would be pointless for someone like yourself to buddy up with someone say in Kent. Yes the forum is great but we could all achieve so much more with a phone call or a visit when there is a real problem. How many times have we all seen the tread start with "Help needed URGENT" how much easier would it be for that member to pick up the phone, call his or her buddy and get help stright away.

Granted that we dont all know each others history as far as reefing experience but lets just say that for those of us that have been around for a while, we kind of work out who's worth listening to, same question could be raised on how a new mod is chosen.

Excellent idea and, let's face it, if the buddy didn't know the exact answer he/she would more than likely know someone who did !

Course we do, Heller's my buddy, we both bounce things off each other and ask for opinions on things. It works

Lets face it, how many of the new members have the phone numbers of half the mod team on their phone?
