I also had black sand in a tropical tank, it looked great at first, but after a while as has been said it was a complete pain to keep clean.

Interested here on this topic as I was thinking of going with Black Live sand. There are a few regions around the world that have black sand due to volcanic activity so I can't see why not I was just wondering how the animals would react to it.
But the consensus here seems to be No to Black sand.
    I'm still out on this.

ok so seriously I didnt mention my sh!t nor any sh!t being black but in general though fish sh!t is a dark colour and I would assume that black sand would mask rather than highlight crap?

I know its visible on my sand bed which is why I mess with flow and cuc to try an keep it in suspension in order to be filtered or dealt with by other means. Does this not apply to black sand?

You really don't want fish waste hanging around in the display

Fine sand and high flow keep the waste in suspension so the sump can deal with it

I have a huge number of pods and bristle worms in the sump which processes the waste

I don't have a skimmer so need CUC

so im right in thinking theres no real difference?

like you say you dont want or want as little as possible waste staying in the display. As mentioned I try use flow to keep waste suspended to head for the drains and use cuc to deal with hard to reach places so if I was using black sand I would be in the same situation.

Maybe those who use black sand feel its more visible because the above isnt the case?

Can any one with black sand add to why they feel it shows up detritus?

TBH Roger I think you should try it. Your system will be designed to house LPS so what a good way to enhance the colours.

I'm using black sand in my tank.. It does show some but you have to look closely.. This is in a new setup.. However! I dropped my cleaner (magnetic) tank side and when I lifted it out there where circle of sand showing the magnet placement on the cleaner! I don't use a magnetic cleaner near the bed now, fear of scratching tank glass.. BUT I still love the contrast..
