I really like this setup :thumbup1: although I wasn't sure about a hang on the side refugium, I actually think it looks great![]()
Hi bud tanks, I did transfer this in to my upgrade about 6 weeks did run the tank for almost 15 months. I found the miracle mud quite useful in the first 5 months or so to keep parameters up but after that was more an issue den useful end up removing it all and fill every space I had in the back with ceramic rubble my favourite media at the moment. By doing that and the hanging fuge I was able to keep 6 nano fish in der with no issues always with low nitrates, off course I was also running a mini reactor with bio pellets in the back and a air driven protein skimmer.
In my opinion if I was doing it again I would do as fallow:
AN-40 plus stand
First chamber:
Would fill it all with coarse sponge just leaving enough space on top for a sheet of poly pad. In between the coarse sponges also a small bag with carbon and rowa phos mixed.
The corse sponges I would leve it alone and just clean every 2 months or so they will house a lot of bacteria there for a good biological filter
Chamber 2 and under chamber 1 fill it all with ceramic rubble just leaving some space for a micro air driven protein skimmer
Chamber 3 return pump 1000l plus some k1 micro tumbling on the top with a nano air pump ( will need to block the top with a fine hard sponge to prevent salt spills )
Then I would still do the side fuge same way as I did b4
I would add an stc-1000 with a 100w heater and a hang on fan for aquarium on top as temperature went really high this summer
Also I never did this in my nano but I would definitely add a 3 way dosing pump to dose kh, ca and Mg this would of saved me a fortune in coral definitely worth a go if you planning on having sps and lps
And for circulation any suitable pump controllable on pulse mode
Top tip if you on a budget I would get most of the stuff second hand
Also top tip for wend you cycling the tank:
If you go for the fuge idea I would fill the tank add at list 10£ worth of macro in the fuge and only light up the fuge for the first week this will help stopping nuisance algae growing in the rock on the display tank
Hope it helps bud

Thanks for the indeapth infomation.
Well firstly I am not new to reef keeping but to this forum,I have had lots of setups, nanos and 280l systems but when I look at yours with all the mods I thought I need to know what modification you have done.
Secondly I use mud on my Betta 680 and I thought it was fantastic as it releases trace elements and fertiliser to grow algaes like no tomorrow!
Here was a old picture of my Betta and my nano wave combo.

Awesome set ups bud, what's the name of that pink acro? I need one of those in my new system [emoji41], my bad bud I didn't realised you were a pro I think we share the same entusiasmo for the challenge that this hobby brings will looking forward to follow your tread and learn a few tings from you bud.
Also Don't take me wrong I love the mud and I have it in my new system too. In the AN-40 I added 300g of it and I just think that personally is not enough or was just the stuff that I got not the best. In my new system I have 5 or 6 kg of miracle mud and algae is growing like mad

Thank you for the kind words Afonso.
The pink Sps is a pink millipora it was one of my favourite as you can see by the pic.
I wouldn't say that I am pro just careful planing of my setups and just give them time to grow ect.
As for the mud you do need a lot of surface area for it to work also I used to add new mud every 3-4 months to ensure that the trade elements don't die off ect.
Also one thing with the mud I forgot to mention is The only real problems I have had is if the power goes out for a substantial period of time. When this occurs the mud can go anoxic and once the power does go back on it may not only leach some harmful compounds into the tank, but it will also suck the oxygen out of the tank, this combined action can be harmful especially to the fish.
As for the algae I would just give it time also if you algae is not growing then you don't have enough waste/nutrients in your system, which isn't a bad thing TBH.
Also have you got a link for your new setup please!
Keep up the good work.
Regards Dan.
"Planning and give them time to grow" I learn this the hard way, I did some next level silly mistakes wend I first started this tank spent my first 5 months or so fighting stuff in the tank that probably would never happened if I just had left the tank alone lol
Good idea I might try this my self to and change it more often not really looking forward to it do. Did you use any kind of container in your sump to keep the mud?
