Reef and Marine Fish Forum
What are the best test kits for phosphate and nitrate on the market?? New to the hobby so want to invest in the best thanks in advance.
Hi all! Well I’ve bit the bullet and returned to marine fish again. I did have a small tank before which just ended in disaster so decided to sell up, this time round I am not being beaten and have bought everything I believe to make a good setup! I got everything delivered last Friday 13/10/17, Here is the equipment, let me know what you think:
Most important thing TCM V2 100gallom RO unit
Ea Reef pro 900S tank and cabinet
TCM V2 Iluminaire 900 connect
Red Sea reef base reef pink 20kg sand...
Ok. Following on from my previous post some developments.
Lots of red slime on my sand, which from reading is the bi-product of the bacterial action of cyano bacteria.
I'm scooping it out with a net, rinsing the sand thoroughly until its all washed away before returning it.
Phosphates have now dropped right back again, and curiously the skimmate has lightened considerably from it's previously near black colour to light brown, which would suggest less organics? So, if the cyano bacteria...
So what do you think and what are your experiences with keeping fish in a reef system and a fish only system, in your experience were/are your fish more healthy than in the other and if so why?
Personally, my fish seem more comfortable in my reef than when I had a fish only system but that was many many moons ago and of course things have changed greatly.
Here is a good bit of information that I read years ago,and I though would be a good item for all you guys and girls on here.

Reef Safe Plastics & Leaching (Myths & Facts)
This topic came up when someone in my reefclub posted a thread about plastic autotopoff container and which one should be used. Everyone in the reefclub jumped on it suggesting #1 or #2 plastics.
I decided to do...
The only things I've changed recently are that I've added a piece of caribsea life rock that used to be in my tank once a long time ago (i.e. 7 months) and also have added an upturned butter tub (to raise my skimmer in the sump).
The butter tub must surely be catering safe and so I assumed ok for salty use?
Is it more likely to be the rock? Had them about a week now and getting fed up, but hope they will clear when the source runs out
