Hi,
You will generally read that phosphates should be below 0.03 (ish) but many people have good tanks with good coral growth above that level,
So what is your level and is your tank good (In your own opinion)
less than 0.03
0.03 - 0.09
0.1 - 0.3
above 0.3

For soft corals and LPS your fine. It's SPS that general don't colour up as well at elevated po4 levels

mines at 0.064 ppm
0.052 on a d&d test kit. Thats becaise my tanks only 10 weeks old & my reef bone is still leaching phos.
Rowaphos in a reactor & liquid phos remover dosed every day to bring it down.

I havent voted yet for the reason im just getting over (i hope lol) algae trub ie cynao/diatoms but my salifert kit read 0 so ill vote and test again when its cleared up and give a reading. I have ordered rowaphos and carbon to help and my sand sifting conch is doing a fantastic job of clearing it all as well (great buy imo). Also knocked the lights down a couple of hours a day over the last 2 weeks and that has also helped. Im waffling now so ill shurrup lol
Voted, 0.03-0.09 because that’s what they are, and nothing i do seems to reduce it!!
Read this, it is written by an expert reef chemist. Phosphate and the Reef Aquarium by Randy Holmes-Farley - Reefkeeping.com
In a nut shell it basically explains how its almost pointless to test for phosphates in the first place. Personally I gave up testing after reading this article a few years back and concentrate on prevention.
I don't get algae blooms and my sps have done well with these simple phosphate preventive measures: good skimming, regular water changes, iron oxide hydroxide in a bag and carefull feeding. But no phos test kit![]()
