Default Build Diary for my display tank (Trigon 350 with sump)

This tank has now been running for about a year. Heres how I did it:

I converted my freshwater Trigon 350 to a reef tank.
I already had one reef tank, but decided to go reef with my trigon as well.

I had massive success using a chaeto based refugium / sump in my existing tank, so I did the same thing with my trigon.

I bought some parts and manufactured othersg the others (e.g. wier) myself. I have the luxury of a full workshop and CNC laser cutter!

    Here was my basic idea:

The sump is 21x21x21 custom made to fit. I made acrylic baffles using the CNC laser.
    Drains are 2 x 50mm. I aquired a eheim compact+ 3000 as the return pump.
The wier was laser cut from clear acrylic. I won't be skimming the tank, as I've always been successful without skimming. I will be keeping mostly softies anyway.

The tank is lit with a combination of T5s and Cree XP LEDs on a custom build. 16 White XP-Gs, 8 Blue XP-Es and 8 Royal Blue XP-Es, if I remember correctly...

In terms of rock, I did quite well for myself. I spent 240 and have got somewhere in the region of 70 KG live rock, some with large corals on.

So..here it is, the step by step build:

First, I used the laser cutter to cut my wier out of acrylic:

Next I used the laser cutter to cut one of the baffles for the sump:

The next step was to modify the hood for the LED strips. I chose to replace two flaps and the rear light unit with a single piece of aluminium. I'll be keeping the front T5s and the front feeding flap:

Next up - drilling the tank and fitting the wier. It should be note I used standpipes, acrylic on glass is not strong enough to play a structural role.

Finally, I assembled my light bars and tested them out. The LED layout has changed sinc this photo was taken:

Heres the tank as it looks now. Its not a great pic as there is lots of reflection off the glass. I'll get some better ones tonight when it gets dark outside.

    Hi Tom

Nice to see your tank from the very beginning, and I notice you have your own CNC laser cutter etc - I know ChippyPah has just upgraded to a laser so maybe you 2 could swap notes / advice etc.

Tank looks ace, and everything looks really healthy

My one and only critiscm is the size of the piccies.

If you are using the insert button under the smilies, choose attachments etc and then change to original only this would then give bigger piccies in the thread. You may or not have noticed but we are piccie mad on here.

If you are doing them as attachments, then just copy the URL and paste into the URL box once you have clicked on the icon.

Also sorry for being nowty before. I think I am on my period or summit.

Ged and Clearwater for your comments.

I think I've got the image size sussed now - would have struggled without the help Ged.

I'm fortunate in that I teach Resistant Materials and Electronics, which gives me access to a silly amount of equipment. The laser is a pretty handy bit of kit, it has to be said.

I'll try and get some better pictures of the tank with less reflection tonight.

I'll probably add more details on the LED lighting that I installed. I'm not sure how many on salty box use DIY LED lighting - I'll have to have a search and see what other members have done.
