Hazey's Reef tank from start. Almost 3 years old now

Hi all, I started keeping a reef tank 18 months ago after keeping Malawi Cichlids for quite a few years.

1st of all I emptied my Jewel vision 180 of my current set up & sold the lot to 2 fellow Cichlid breeders.

Whilst the tank was empty I decided to cut out the black central brace bar & siliconed in a glass one in it's place. Left the tank upside down for a couple of days for the silicone to cure. I also removed the internal filter box.

I bought from a fellow reefer all of his live rock & his live sand...oh, he through in his old tank water for free
This is a picture straight after I had just added it all to my tank. It was approx midnight so once all of it was in I just went to bed


I had an eheim external filter with just filter wool in it & 2 Korallia's for water movement

This is a pic of my tank after 3 or 4 weeks after it had settled down
I added 2 common clowns & a dotty back as my friend was shutting his fish only set up & gave me these 3 fish.


Fitted my Aquamedic 150w halide light above the tank

Added a flame angel & a baby yellow tang


Went out & bought a few corals, Hammer head, frog spawn & goniapora

Had quite a few problems with the dottyback fish, he was terrorising my other fish & I had, had enough. Tried to catch him with a fish trap but after 3 weeks & no catch I decided to rip my tank apart

Bought, modded & added an ATC800



My tank just before I decided to change it all around.


I wanted to build 2 live rock towers & open up the swimming space
I had 2 fellow reefers come round to my house for the day to help me, I shipped my wife & kids off to my parents for the whole day

I cleaned all of the coraline algae off the glass & then painted it a blue colour
I sold all of my fish except my Yellow Tang

Bought a pair of Clarki Clownfish

Bought a red bubble tipped nem from a fellow reefer who fragged his mother

Updated pic of my tank with the nem in the centre. The Clowns went straight into the nem within 2 mins of me adding the nem


I then had an issue of aggression again as there was no hiding places for the fish so I decided to add more live rock to the centre to create more caves for the fish to rest in
This is my tank as of 3 days ago. I have added an Aquaray & 6 sets of blue water proof LED's over the tank

Tina, I have posted the 2 pics of your Mandarin fish to Mark at Cockfields & have asked him to try & get me a male & a female just like yours as I really like your female Mandarin

She just started to eat New Era Pellets, really chuffed with her.

They both now will eat it if some is stuck to the rock.

Stunning fish, just hope they continue to so well.

oh wow!!
i was going to comment on what a huge difference the new lighting made.. then it just got a gazillion times better!
looks absolutly stunning,i hope mine looks as good as yours when i get going on it.
