    Default Odd Brown slime algae

    Hi all,

For a while my tank has been suffereing from a type of algae that i havent seen before, it kind of looks like a type of cyno but its thinner and brown in colour and covers rocks, substrate and glass. It has a kind of stringy look where it gets thin and is easily blown off with a powerhead.

I have been very tied up with work so only just carried out a full suite of tests and a few are out.

    Phos. 0.008 mg/lP
    Nitrate 0-0.2
    PH 8.0
DKH 3.8 if working from top of the plunger.?? Very low!
Calcium reading was greater than 500ppm as I ran out of the 1.0ml solution
    MG 1470
    Temp 78
    SG 1026

    All salifert tests.

Clearly DKH is low and I am dosing with Bicarb of Soda to bring this up.

Do you think this could cause such an algae infestation. All life in the tank appears fine.

    Any thoughts would be great.

    Could be Dinoflagellates.

    Does it look like this?

Hopefully I have added a few pics, just as well the lights literally just switched off.

I would say it isnt as hairy as your picture, seems like cyno but thinner and lighter if that makes any sense.

The stringy bit in your description made me think Dinos but it doesn't look like it. Looks like Cyano to me though.

I thought cyno was mainly to do with flow around the tank. I have an MP40 seio 2400 l/h and 2000l/h circulation pump so dont think its that.
Plus it look a bit too thin to be cyno as I have had patches of that that can be lifted off in one piece, this will just discolve.

Would the low dk cause this?
