I was lumbered with a red eared terrapin a fair few years ago when an ex bought one for his son and his ex mrs refused to have it in her house. It grew from a 50p size to a dinnerplate size and he let me 'keep it' when I threw him out. I rehomed it in the end but that thing really could give a damned good bite. It wasn't the terrapin's fault, but I got to hate the poor creature through association with my ex I cleaned it's tank out every week religiously and have to say it didn't smell bad. Used to make me laugh when he kept swimming against the glass when he saw me coming with dinner!

I love the look of the turtles that have loooong necks and quite round dish like shells with a pointy nose myself

Still is I'm afraid. I've only seen one place with the correct lghting. A chain of aquatic stores was keeping them with no lighting whatsoever and their turtle "kit" was a 2' tank with no lighting and a tiny filter. I complained but never heard anything back. All 4 of my turtles are rehomes.

That's a real shame but seems to be the normal with many pet and even aquatic shops. The staff don't have the knowledge and some will do/say anything for a quick sale.
