Provisional Trip Details - World Museum Aquarium Liverpool
Who is invited?
Absolutely every single Salty Box Member.
Why is this event taking place?
Quite simply because the World Museum Aquarium, appealed for some frags for their new project. So we decided to make it a day out, so that our members and the Museum benefit from each other.
Do I have to bring a frag?
No, but if it would be most appreciated if you could do so. If you genuinely do not have any corals to frag, why not buy one off a fellow reefer, or a LFS and then bring that?
This is our chance as a bunch of reefers, to help out a Museum on their project, as well as being a part of their new display for the enjoyment of millions of others over the coming years.
Please bring a LPS / SPS / Softie frag for the Museum as a donation, if at all possible, but it is not a condition of entry, everyone is still welcome.
Provisional Dates
The earliest possible date that they could accomodate a large group would be either Wednesday 13th, Thursday 14th or Friday 15th July. We have now added a multiple choice poll. Please choose any day that you can attend.
They have a demonstration area that can hold approx 50 people so I would suggest that would be the maximum on any one day but they would be happy to put on more visits if people are interested even if they dont have frags to donate.
Therefore, we will allocate places on first come first served. ie the first 50 people will be on day 1 etc etc
The whole idea is for the Museum to accept frags off us as a donation to help stock their new project. See this thread for further information. I must stress, to come on this day out, you do not have to donate anything, it's more a case of, if we can as a forum, give the Museum as many different frags as possible, at no charge, in exchange for all of their effort, accomodating us for the day itself.
What is possible for the day out
I can put on a talk for the group about the museum, its history, what we currently do and our plans for the future, and a bit about the challenges of running a public aquarium compared to a home aquarium.
I cant promise yet as everyone is away for bank holidays etc but I will try and get some catering sorted, even if it is just tea and biscuits. Again I cant promise yet but I will try and get the aquarium closed off to the public for an hour while the group are in.
It would be best for us to do this at 10am. That is when the museum opens but I could just then keep the aquarium closed for the first hour, rather than trying to empty a full aquarium half way through the day!!
To give you some background and what the group can expect, we are a small public aquarium within a very large museum. The aquarium has two systems accros 21 tanks. Half is temperate local species, and half is tropical. The tropical section has two "reef Displays" and a mangrove set up. At the moment though all the "corals" are fake and this is obviously where the donations come in.
The museum itself is great with a bughouse, planatarium, natural history, dinosaurs and ancient peoples (Egypt, Greece, Rome). All of which will be open and freely accesible to the group.
Let me know what you think and as soon as the bank holidays are over I will find out about catering, closing the area and a plaque to acknowledge the contribution of the group and confirm exactly what will be involved in the visit.
If you want to go, then please put your name down and the first 40 are on day 1 etc - First come first served and all that.
(we can set the actual date later on). If you want to choose the best day, then add that as well as your name etc
